Justin Verlander Throws 7 Shutout Innings in a 4-0 Tigers Win
The Detroit Tigers beat the Cleveland Indians tonight 4-0.
The Tigers scored in the 1st inning after singles by Miguel Cabrera and Prince Fielder, which set up runners on 1st and 3rd for Delmon Young who hit a single to drive in Cabrera. Brennan Boesch was up next and hit a single to drive in Fielder and the Tigers took an early 2-0 lead.
The Tigers added to their lead in the 2nd inning after a walk from Alex Avila, who reached 2nd base on a hit-and-run play, then scored on a double from Austin Jackson. Miguel Cabrera eventually came up and hit a single to drive in Jackson which gave the Tigers a 4-0 lead.
Justin Verlander did well tonight. He pitched 7 shutout innings, giving up 6 hits, walking 1 and striking out 6 batters; he earned his 14th win of the season.
Joaquin Benoit came in for relief and pitched a scoreless 8th inning.
Jose Valverde came in and pitched a scoreless 9th inning to get the Tigers the win.
The Tigers continue their series with the Indians tommorrow as Anibal Sanchez (7-12 4.07 ERA) pitches against Justin Masterson (11-13 4.96 ERA).
