Umpire Rob Drake Leads Tigers to a 6-2 Loss

The Detroit Tigers lost to the New York Yankees today 6-2.

Max Scherzer's numbers did not look very good today, and it was unfortunate that umpire Rob Drake had 2 different strike zones and changed the flow of the game. Scherzer gave up a career high 7 walks in 4 and 2/3rds innings and gave up 3 runs. 2 of those runs shouldn't of scored because the inning should've been over, but again, Rob Drake just didn't want that to happen.

The Tigers had trouble doing much to Sabathia today, which can be contributed to Rob Drake having the 2 different strike zone's, but Prince Fielder got the Tigers on the board in the 4th inning with his 3rd home run on the season.

The Tigers came back in the 6th inning down 3-1 and started with a single by Brennan Boesch. Miguel Cabrera was next and hit a RBI double. However, the Tigers lineup is only 4 guys deep today, so the threat was over.

Luke Putkonen made his major league debut with the bases loaded and was able to get Curtis Granderson out to end the inning and keep the score 3-1. Putkonen allowed 2 runs to score in the 7th inning though and made it a 5-2 game which was just to much for the Tigers to overcome today.

The Tigers open a home series tommorow with the Kansas City Royals as Duane Below makes his first start of the season against Luke Hochevar.

Drew Smyly Wins First Career Game in Tigers 7-5 Victory

The Detroit Tigers snapped their 5 game losing streak today beating the New York Yankees 7-5.

Drew Smyly pitched 6 innings giving up 2 hits, 1 run, 2 walks and had 7 strikeouts to earn his first career win.

For the 2nd straight game, Austin Jackson got on base to lead off the game and then stole 2nd base. This time though, he scored a run. After a walk to Prince Fielder, Andy Dirks hit a 3 run home run, his first of the season, to give the Tigers a 3-0 lead.

After a Nick Swisher home run in the bottom of the inning, the Tigers came back in the 2nd inning with base hits by Alex Avila and Austin Jackson, Brennan Boesch hit a RBI double, then Miguel Cabrera hit a 2 RBI single to give the Tigers a 6-1 lead.

Miguel Cabrera hit an opposite field home run in the 8th inning to make it a 7-2 game; it was Cabrera's 7th home run on the season.

Phil Coke gave up 1 run in the 7th inning, Octavio Dotel pitched a scoreless 8th inning, and Jose Valverde gave up 3 runs in the 9th inning and made it very interesting, but the Tigers still won which is what matters.

Tigers Blow Late Lead, Lose 7-6

The Tigers came into this game with a losing streak and had Justin Verlander taking the mound. Well, Verlander left the game with a lead, but he didn't factor into the decision.

The Tigers scored their first run in the 2nd inning after a Don Kelly walk, then a triple by Brad Eldred, making his Tigers debut, on a badly misplayed ball by Raul Ibanez and tied the game at 1 early on.

The Tigers came back in the 3rd inning with another leadoff single by Austin Jackson. That followed up with a single by Brennan Boesch, and then a RBI single by Miguel Cabrera to give the Tigers a 2-1 lead.

That RBI by Cabrera was the 1000th of his career!

Prince Fielder gave the Tigers their 4th straight single to start the inning and drove in Brennan Boesch.

Justin Verlander started out well, but left a pitch up in the zone in the 5th inning to Russell Martin who hit it the opposite way towards the little league porch in right field and that gave the Yankees a 4-3 lead. However the Tigers came back in the 6th inning with a Jhonny Peralta double and Ryan Raburn single; a wild pitch got Raburn to 2nd base, so the Tigers had runners on 2nd and 3rd with no outs. Austin Jackson had a 2 RBI double next and put the Tigers back in the lead 5-4.

Brennan Boesch had a hard lineout, and then Miguel Cabrera was walked intentionally, because the Yankees are afraid of him. Prince Fielder made the Yankees pay though by hitting another RBI single and gave the Tigers a 6-4 lead.

The Yankees came back and scored an unearned run after an error by Don Kelly which would've ended the inning; it was a 6-5 game after 6 innings.

Verlander was done after 6 innings, he gave up 5 runs (4 earned), gave up 7 hits and had 4 strikeouts. This wasn't his best game ever, but he did his job. With this being his last start in April, it also makes his 2.41 ERA the lowest he's ever had for the month of April.

Octavio Dotel came in to pitch the 7th inning and got the first two outs, and then Phil Coke came in to record the final out of the 7th.

Joaquin Benoit gave up a run in the 8th inning to make it a 6-6 game.

Brayan Villarreal came on to pitch the 9th inning and imploded. He couldn't throw strikes or even hit the catcher's glove. The Tigers lost 7-6 on a walk-off wild pitch.

Tigers Release Brandon Inge

According to Danny Knobler the Tigers have released Brandon Inge. Inge had only 2 hits in 20 ABs this season after hitting just .197 last season.

The news is great news for Tigers fans, who have wanted Inge gone for a long time; Inge is a career .234 hitter.

Danny Knobler also mentioned Brad Eldred will be called up to the Tigers with Inge being released. Eldred this season in Toledo is hitting .388 with 13 home runs in 20 games.

I just want to say this to Inge: SEE YA!

Mariners Sweep Tigers at Home for 2nd Straight Season

The Detroit Tigers were swept by the Seattle Mariners with a 5-4 loss today.

How else did this game start? A 3 run home run by Justin Smoak who was in a 0-15 slump. I know this is hard to believe, but the Seattle offense really isn't as good as they've looked in this series.

Rick Porcello did well after the first inning, where he gave up the 3 run home run to Smoak, but after that gave up only 2 runs in the next 5 and 2/3rds innings he pitched. It was not a great start, but it was a nice comeback by Porcello after a bad first inning.

The Tigers offense didn't have a hit till the 5th inning. They had several hard hit balls right at the defense and a blown call, but a Don Kelly bloop single in the 5th inning followed by an error by Alex Liddi on a hit from Jhonny Peralta started a rally by the Tigers. Ryan Raburn had a RBI single, but Gerald Laird ended the inning after hitting into a double play. The Tigers got back at it though in the 6th inning with Andy Dirks leading off with a triple, and then Brennan Boesch drove him in with a RBI single. Then, right on cue, Miguel Cabrera tied the game with his 6th home run on the season.

With the home run by Miguel Cabrera, he now has the most home run's hit at Comerica Park with 77. Brandon Inge was tied with 76 before, so it's a great thing to have Inge off the record books.

The Tigers came back in the bottom of the 7th inning after a misplay by Brennan Boesch allowed a run to score for Seattle. An infield single by Jhonny Peralta started the inning, and then Ryan Raburn moved him to 2nd base with a sacrifice bunt. Alex Avila came in to pinch hit for Gerald Laird, and drew a walk; Peralta moved over to 3rd base after a wild pitch. Andy Dirks grounded out leaving runners on 2nd and 3rd with 2 outs for Brenann Boesch. After getting ahead 3-1 in the count, he chased ball 4 then grounded out to the shortstop and ended the inning.

The Tigers didn't get anything going in the 8th, but in the 9th Don Kelly led off with a single. Jhonny Peralta bunted him to 2nd base and Ryan Raburn had an infield single (I thought it was an error), but Alex Avila hit into a double play to end the game.

The Tigers head to New York for a 3 game road series tommorow as Justin Verlander takes on Ivan Nova.

Drew Smyly Autograph Mailday

Today I was able to pick up my first Drew Smyly Autograph. It came out of 2010 Donruss Elite and is numbered 636/799. Smyly was a second round pick in 2010 by the Detroit Tigers and is currently in the starting rotation for them this season. I'm happy to add this card into my personal collection!

Adam Wilk Pitches Poorly in Tigers Loss

The Detroit Tigers lost to the Seattle Mariners tonight 9-1

Adam Wilk pitched poorly tonight. He went 2 innings and gave up 6 runs on 8 hits.

Hey Adam, just a note: this is the majors and the Mariners aren't a good offensive team, so this kind of performance isn't gonna work. Thad Weber then came in for relief and wasn't good either. Perhaps those two can hold hands as they take the bus back to Toledo? Collin Balester was the next guy in and didn't do anything wrong tonight, however Duane Below came in to show the Tigers do have a long reliever that is very good.

The Tigers offense is still yet to wake up. The only highlight was a solo Home Run from Brennan boesch.

Rick Porcello will look to rebound from a poor outing in his last start as he takes on Hector Noesi in the series finale.

Tigers Lose in Extra Innings 3-2

The Detroit Tigers lost to the Texas Rangers today in extra innings 3-2.

Drew Smyly pitched very well in his 3rd career start going 6 innings, giving up only 1 run and striking out 7. Octavio Dotel came in to pitch the 7th inning, Joaquin Benoit started the 8th inning and got 1 out, before walking Elvis Andrus. Phil Coke was brought into the game, but a steal by Elvis Andrus and a throwing error by Alex Avila followed by a sacrifice fly by Josh Hamilton tied the game at 2; Coke pitched a scoreless 9th inning as well. Jose Valverde pitched a scoreless 10th inning.

Thad Weber made his major league debut in the 11th inning and was bad. He walked the first batter, then gave up base hits to the next two batters. After that squeeze play which hit of the knee of Alberto Gonzalez was ruled a fair ball, instead of a foul ball which it was to give the Rangers the lead.

The Tigers scoring started in the 3rd inning with Ramon Santiago hitting a leadoff triple. It looked like he was gonna be stranded on 3rd base to end the inning, however Colby Lewis threw a wild pitch that Santiago scored on.

Brennan Boesch broke a 1-1 tie in the 6th inning though with a solo home run; that was is his 2nd home run on the year, which ended up being the winning run.

The Tigers have an off day tommorow, and will open a 3 game series Tuesday night as Max Scherzer takes the mound against Jason Vargas of the Seattle Mariners.

Verlander Leads Tigers to a 3-2 Win; Split Double-Header

The Tigers lost the first game of a day-night double-header to the Texas Rangers 10-4. Rick Porcello pitched very bad giving up 9 runs (8 earned) in 1 inning pitched. The Tigers were lucky though that Duane Below was able to throw 6 scoreless innings in relief and saved the bullpen from being used more than it was.

The offense never had much going, but Austin Jackson hit his 3rd home run on the season and Miguel Cabrera had 3 hits including his 4th home run on the year.

The Tigers had the ultimate stopper in Justin Verlander pitching the second game of the double-header though, and Verlander didn't let anyone down.

While Verlander wasn't at his best today, he allowed only 1, unearned run in 6 innings, gave up 4 hits, had 3 walks and had 8 strikeouts. The Texas hitters drove up his pitch count though with a lot of foul balls; Verlander won his 2nd game on the season.

Octavio Dotel came in to pitch the 7th inning and according to the Tigers it was Dotel's 700th career appearance, which makes him the 93rd player in MLB history to make atleast 700 appearances.

Joaquin Benoit gave up 1 run in the 8th inning, but Jose Valverde had a scoreless 9th inning, although he did make things very interesting, and got the save.

Delmon Young got the Tigers on the board in the 4th inning with a RBI single to drive in Brennan Boesch; it was the Tigers first hit of the game. After an Alex Avila walk, Ramon Santiago hit a 2 RBI single to give the Tigers a 3-1 lead. After a Don Kelly walk, Brandon Inge of course ended the inning with his trademark pop up to 2nd base. The fans at Comerica Park were very loud in voicing their displeasure.

Rangers Blowout the Tigers in a 10-3 Loss

The Detroit Tigers lost to the Texas Rangers tonight 10-3.

Adam Wilk pitched only 4 innings and gave up 3 runs (2 earned) while giving up 10 hits. Colin Balester gave up 2 runs (1 earned) then Daniel Schlereth came into the game. You know what happened? Of course, he pitched horrible.

Daniel Schlereth is not a major league pitcher, and he proved it again tonight. He gave up 5 runs and has an ERA of 12.60 on the season. Tigers fans can only hope he is on his way to Toledo.

The Tigers offense never got it going, but Don Kelly had a nice game driving in all 3 runs that the Tigers scored.

Prince Fielder Has 2 RBI, Tigers Win 4-3

The Detroit Tigers swept the Kansas City Royals with a 4-3 win tonight.

Jhonny Peralta had a RBI single in the 2nd inning to open the scoring. Prince Fielder stole his first base of the season in the 4th inning, which followed up with the Tigers getting no runs in after loading the bases with no outs.

Prince Fielder drove in Miguel Cabrera in the 5th inning with a RBI double.

Gerald Laird scored on a wild pitch to tie the game in the 7th inning; Prince Fielder would drive Miguel Cabrera in again to give the Tigers a 4-3 lead.

Max Scherzer pitched ok going 6 innings, giving up 3 runs and earning the win. Phil Coke came in for the 7th inning, Joaquin Benoit pitched the 8th and Jose Valverde closed the game.

Miguel Cabrera & Prince Fielder Lead Tigers To a 3-1 Victory

The Detroit Tigers beat the Kansas City Royals tonight 3-1.

The scoring started when the Tigers scored a run in the 2nd inning after a Ramon Santiago sacrifice fly. Miguel Cabrera ended a 0-22 slump as well, and jokingly, asked for the ball back.

A scary moment took place in the 3rd inning when Drew Smyly got hit in the back on an infield single by Alcides Escobar, but would stay in the game and pitch well. He pitched 6 innings and gave up one unearned run; Smyly ended up with a no-decision.

Miguel Cabrera and Prince Fielder drove in 1 run each in the 8th inning to give the Tigers a 3-1 lead and from that point it was over.

Joaquin Benoit went on to pitch the 8th inning and Jose Valverde picked up the save.

Justin Verlander Throws a Complete Game in Tigers 3-2 Win

The Detroit Tigers beat the Kansas City Royals tonight 3-2.

Austin Jackson led the game off with a home run and got the Tigers a quick lead. Justin Verlander gave up a run on a bloop single that tied the game back up in the bottom half of the first. Verlander would settle down after the inning though.

Verlander pitched a complete game, had 9 strikeouts and gave up 7 hits to earn his first win of the season. Basically, it was just another day at work for him.

Jhonny Peralta had 3 hits for the day, and Brandon Inge somehow hit a 2 run homer in the top of the 5th inning to put the Tigers up 3-1, and from there, the game was over, because Verlander brought his A-game.

Tommorow, Drew Smyly makes his 2nd start of the season as he takes on Bruce Chen.

Rick Porcello Pitches Excellent in a 5-2 Tigers Victory

The Detroit Tigers beat the Chicago White Sox today 5-2.

The White Sox again didn't attempt to cheat today, so atleast they gave their fans one thing to be proud of.

Rick Porcello pitched excellent today winning his first game of the season after going 7 and 2/3rds innings, giving up 1 run, and striking out 4 batters. Joaquin Benoit came in for relief and got the final out of the 8th inning; Jose Valverde pitched the 9th inning and made the game interesting as he always does.

The scoring started today with a Gerald Laird solo home run in the top of the 3rd inning to give the Tigers an early 1-0 lead; Laird had 3 hits today. Jhonny Peralta scored on a wild pitch 5th inning and Prince Fielder scored on a wild pitch in the 6th inning. Ramon Santiago and Prince Fielder had RBI single's in the 8th inning.

Tigers Offense Goes Cold; Lose 5-1

The Chicago White Sox beat the Detroit Tigers today 5-1.

The White Sox didn't attempt to cheat today, so that's a positive for them.

The action started when the Tigers came up for the 2nd inning and had a chance to score, but couldn't get any runs with the bases loaded and 2 outs, after Floyd had walked a batter, and hit two batters. Who ended that threat? Of course, it was Ryan Raburn!

Adam Wilk in his first major league start had a 1-2-3 inning on 7 pitches, but in the bottom of the 2nd inning Alexei Ramirez hit a solo home run to give the White Sox the inital lead and gave up another solo shot to Tyler Flowers in the 5th inning. While Prince Fielder was batting in the 6th inning, a foul ball hit Wilk and he had to be taken to the clubhouse and was done for the game. He pitched well going 5 innings giving up only 2 runs and only threw 62 pitches.

According to Jason Beck Wilk left with a left shoulder contusion, and will be able to make his next scheduled start.

Collin Balester came into the game and gave up another run. A word of advice, Collin: Adam Dunn will chase anything in the dirt, so don't leave a pitch down the middle when a guy is in scoring position.

Of course Leyland would use Daniel Schlereth today, and what did Schlereth do? Of course he gave up a hit, a walk and a run. It's not like the Tigers have Phil Coke who hasn't pitched that much lately. Oh wait...

Atleast Schlereth proved he could strike out Dunn though! Such a rare thing to do.

Schlereth came in for the 8th inning and continued to be awful.

The offense did virtually nothing today, but Austin Jackson had 3 hits and Brennan Boesch had a late home run; it was his first on the season.

The series finale has Rick Porcello taking on Chris Sale.

Questionable Play & Horrible Defense Has the Tigers Lose 5-2

The Detroit Tigers lost to the Chicago White Sox today 5-2.

Today's game opened up in a very odd way. Austin Jackson and Brennan Boesch struck out to open the game, but when Miguel Cabrera came up to bat, he noticed the batters box was short in length, and complained about it. This led to a delay in the game to make the batters box the correct size. It's not suprising Chicago would do this. What else is new though? It is Chicago afterall.

Max Scherzer was much better in his 2nd start of the year. He had all his pitches working which led to 11 strikeouts. He did hang a changeup in the 5th inning though which Dayan Viciedo made him pay for by hitting a solo home run. Scherzer started to get tired with 2 outs in the 6th inning though. Giving up 2 runs, 1 which was very questionable on a play at the plate where the runner looked to be out, but was called safe.

Moving on, the Tigers got 2 runs in the top of the 7th after a Miguel Cabrera walk and Delmon Young 2 run homer. Alex Avila was up next with 2 outs hit a single, and Jhonny Peralta hit a double. Andy Dirks was up and hit a ball that would've scored 2 runs, but Dayan Viciedo made a great catch to end the inning and kept the score at 3-2.

After another great defensive play by the White Sox in the 8th, Delmon Young made sure the game was out of reach by showing how awful he is in left field. Good decision to play him in left field, Leyland. It's not like the DH is a better fielder or anything. Oh wait....

Daniel Schlereth also continued to pitch poorly and made sure he was one step closer to Toledo!

Adam Wilk makes his first start of the season tommorow replacing Doug Fister who is on the DL tommorow as he takes on Gavin Floyd.

Brennan Boesch Has 4 RBI, Tigers win 7-2

The Detroit Tigers beat the Tampa Bay Rays today 7-2.

Drew Smyly while not great, gave the Tigers a chance to win in his major league debut. He struggled in the 1st inning giving up 2 walks and a hit but got the next 3 batters out to end the inning, and ended up going 4 innings giving up 4 hits, walking 3 batters and recording 4 strikeouts.

How did the offense do? Well, until the 5th inning, they had done almost nothing.

Alex Avila drew a walk to begin the inning and stole 2nd base after Peralta struck out on a 3-2 count. Andy Dirks drove in Avila with a triple, and Ryan Raburn was up next. If you know Raburn, you know what he did. Yep, that's right, check swing strikeout! Austin Jackson drew a walk with 2 outs and stole 2nd base before the birthday boy, Brennan Boesch drove in Dirks and Jackson to give the Tigers a 3-1 lead.

The Rays in the top of the 7th came back with a run, but a bad base running play by Carlos Pena ended a good chance to score another run.

In the bottom half of the inning Brennan Boesch drove in 2 more runs after getting a base hit off of Jake McGee. Alex Avila hit a triple to score Prince Fielder in the 8th and the Tigers never looked back.

Jose Valverde pitched a scoreless 9th inning to secure the victory.

The Tigers take their first road trip of the year tommorow as they head to Chicago to play the White Sox. Max Scherzer takes the mound hoping to get back on track as he faces Jake Peavy.

Tigers Blow 9th Inning Lead to the Rays

Justin Verlander had a 1 hitter through 8 innings against the Tampa Bay Rays and had thrown just over 80 pitches going into the 9th inning with a 2-0 lead. The game is over, right? Wrong.

Verlander only recorded 1 out in the 9th and gave up 2 runs before Jim Leyland somehow managed to bring Daniel Schlereth into the game and had him pitch to Elliot Johnson, who was pinch hitting for Matt Joyce. Johnson has a career batting average of .186, but after Schlereth had him down 0-2 in the count, Schlereth managed to walk him.

Hey, nice job Daniel. I'm sure Toledo will be excited to have your services once again!

Jose Valverde was next to come in, and he allowed 2 runs to score before the inning ended and the Tigers lost. Now it is just 1 of 162, but a wasted performance from Justin Verlander took place today, which is sad.

The series finale is tommorow as Drew Smyly makes his major league debut against Jeff Niemann.

Miguel Cabrera, Prince Fielder & Austin Jackson help the Tigers Towards a Win.

Austin Jackson drew two walks and 2 runs scored including a solo Home Run to tie the game in the bottom of the 7th inning.

Phil Coke came in for the 8th and had two strikeouts in an inning of work.

In the bottom of the 8th, Miguel Cabrera led off the inning with a double to right-center field, and was driven in by Prince Fielder to give the Tigers the lead. After a Delmon Young single and Ryan Raburn moving over the runners. Jhonny Peralta drove in Prince Fielder with a sac fly and Gerald Laird added to the lead with a RBI single.

Alex Avila Hits a Walkoff Home Run as the Tigers Win in Extra Innings

Miguel Cabrera came up with 2 on in the 9th and hit a 3 run homer to tie the game at 10-10.

Joaquin Benoit gave up 2 runs in the top of the 11th inning. Benoit threw 20 pitches in yesterday's game, and threw 44 pitches today. Benoit seemed to be tired before the 11th inning began, and struggled to locate his pitches in the 11th inning. The game is over, right?

Not so fast.

The Tigers went on to score 1 run in the bottom of the inning on a Delmon Young sac fly, and with 2 outs in the 11th and 2 strikes on him, Alex Avila hits a 2 run walkoff homer to give the Tigers a 13-12 victory!

Todays starter Max Scherzer struggled giving up 7 runs in 2 and 2/3rds innings. Scherzer didn't have much of a problem getting ahead in the count against hitters, but he couldn't put them away. The Tigers had given him a 4-0 lead after the 1st inning, and 5-2 lead after the 2nd inning. Scherzer ended up with a no decision.

Scherzer will have to be much better than he was today, especially with Doug Fister currently on the DL.

Colin Balester came in after Scherzer and went 2 and 2/3rds innings in his Tigers debut giving up only 1 run that came from Daniel Schlereth giving up a 2 run homer to Adrian Gonzalez. Phil Coke, Brayan Villarreal, Octavio Dotel, and Duane Below also made appearances for the Tigers.

The Tigers offense was led by Austin Jackson who had 4 hits, Jhonny Peralta who had a 3 RBI double and Prince Fielder also had a hit in the 1st inning to give him 1,000 for his career; Cabrera had 5 RBI for the game.

The Tigers have an off day tommorrow and play Tuesday when the Rays come to Comerica as Matt Moore will pitch against Rick Porcello.

Tigers Put Brandon Inge on the 15 Day DL

According to Jason Beck the Tigers have put Brandon Inge on the 15 day DL with a left groin strain.

Inge was trying to win the 2nd base job this Spring after the Tiger signed Prince Fielder and Miguel Cabrera moved to 3rd base. Inge needed to hit well enough to win the job according to manager Jim Leyland earlier this spring after Inge hit .197 in 2011. Inge hit only .180 in 50 at-bats this spring.

It's unclear if the Tigers will release Brandon Inge once he is able to return, however Lynn Henning of the Detroit News brings up an interesting point that the Tigers may have put Inge on the DL to try and buy some time to trade him.

According to the freep Drew Smyly was told by the Tigers that he will start the season as the 5th starter in the rotation. When asked, Smyly's comments were "I am speechless".

Smyly is entering his 2nd season in his pro career after a successful year in Single-A Lakeland and Double-A Erie where he went 11-6 with a 2.07 ERA and 9.3 strikeouts per inning.

The freep mentioned that Smyly will make 1 start in Triple-A Toledo since the Tigers won't need a 5th starter at the begining of the season.

According to Jason Beck Smyly will make his debut on April 12th.
