Tigers Blow 9th Inning Lead to the Rays
Justin Verlander had a 1 hitter through 8 innings against the Tampa Bay Rays and had thrown just over 80 pitches going into the 9th inning with a 2-0 lead. The game is over, right? Wrong.
Verlander only recorded 1 out in the 9th and gave up 2 runs before Jim Leyland somehow managed to bring Daniel Schlereth into the game and had him pitch to Elliot Johnson, who was pinch hitting for Matt Joyce. Johnson has a career batting average of .186, but after Schlereth had him down 0-2 in the count, Schlereth managed to walk him.
Hey, nice job Daniel. I'm sure Toledo will be excited to have your services once again!
Jose Valverde was next to come in, and he allowed 2 runs to score before the inning ended and the Tigers lost. Now it is just 1 of 162, but a wasted performance from Justin Verlander took place today, which is sad.
The series finale is tommorow as Drew Smyly makes his major league debut against Jeff Niemann.
