Rick Porcello Throws 7 Shutout Innings in a 6-2 Tigers Victory


The Detroit Tigers beat the Tampa Bay Rays tonight 6-2.

In the 3rd inning, after singles by Austin Jackson and Quintin Berry, Miguel Cabrera hit an infield single to load the bases with 1 out for Prince Fielder who had a ground out that scored Jackson and the Tigers took a 1-0 lead.

The Tigers added more runs in the 8th inning after a double by Brennan Boesch, then Ramon Santiago was hit-by-the-pitch, and Austin Jackson hit a 3-run home run to give the Tigers a 4-0 lead; it's his 8th of the season.

Rick Porcello pitched great tonight going 7 innings of shutout Baseball. He gave up 4 hits, didn't walk a batter and struck out 4; he earned his 6th win of the season.

Joaquin Benoit came in to pitch the 8th inning and gave up 2 runs, but the Tigers took a 4-2 lead to the top of the 9th inning.

Jhonny Peralta went on to hit a 2 RBI single and the Tigers had a 6-2 lead going to the bottom of the inning.

Jose Valverde had a scoreless 9th inning to get the Tigers the win.

Drew Smyly (2-3 4.48 ERA) starts the series finale for Detroit tommorrow as he takes on Alex Cobb (3-4 4.73 ERA).
